When you begin a weight loss regime, it’s inevitable you’ll constantly be on the lookout for the first signs of fat loss. So where do you lose weight first?
Well, we’re often asked where fat loss will first be noticed in women. While there’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer, here we’re going to explain what affects the order in which you’ll lose your excess fat first.
Where did the fat appear last?
This rule applies to everyone. Generally, fat will come off in the reverse order in which it went on. This means you’ll lose the excess fat that you noticed most recently first! Starting to notice your chubby thighs then don’t despair they’ll be the first thing to go.
If you’ve been overweight for your entire life, it may be difficult to judge where this will be. However, the face and the stomach tends to be the first place fat loss is noticed in women.
Two unavoidable factors influencing fat loss in women
When it comes to the human body and the way in which we lose weight there are two huge factors that we simply can’t avoid. The first is the way in which women are biologically different from men to help us bring children into the world. As for the second, it’s genetics, how our body responds to losing weight is something we can see in other family members.
Biology & Weight Loss
An important in determining where you’ll lose weight first is basic human biology. Biology ensures that women are prepared to get pregnant and raise a child at any time. As such, women tend to store fat around their hips, butts, and thighs, as opposed to the stomach like the men in their life. The reason for this is to ensure the female body has adequate reserves of energy to feed a baby for the first year or 2 of life.
Due to this, getting rid of this fat can be incredibly hard work as you are literally fighting the forces of nature. We’re meant to have some curves after all girls.
Genetics & Fat Loss
Your genetics may influence where you carry the most weight. For example, some people carry most of their excess weight around their hips, while others accumulate more fat around their buttocks. This tendency tends to be passed down from mother to daughter, so if your mother (or daughter) is heavier than you, her body shape may indicate where you would be most likely to hold more fat reserves.
The bad news is that you may hold on to the weight in this area for a longer period of time, well after the rest of your body has slimmed down. However, the good news is that weight loss is possible in all areas, no matter how much you are ‘genetically predisposed’ to have a fat bum! All it takes is a little perseverance.
But how can I change the order of fat loss?
Well, it’s difficult, but there are a couple of other factors which may influence the order of fat loss. Alcohol and exercise, two of dieters most common challenges.
Alcohol & Beer Belly Fat Loss
If your weight was mostly gained through that daily bottle of red wine then stopping drinking suddenly will lead to a dramatic loss of fat from the stomach area. Who’d of thought it beer belly is a real thing not just an excuse!
Exercise & Visceral Fat Loss
If you exercise regularly, it’s likely you’ll lose more fat from your midsection than those who eat healthily but who aren’t engaging in any regular physical activity. This happens because working out increases your metabolism, which helps the body eliminate the visceral fat surrounding the vital organs. Not only is this great for a health boost, but it also gives you back that womanly hourglass figure which is oh so desired.
Your fat loss will be proportional
What we mean by ‘proportional’ is you’ll maintain the same general body shape throughout your weight loss journey. This means if you’re a pear shape, carrying most of your weight around your hips and thighs, you’ll still maintain your pear shape even as your fat levels decrease. The only exception to this is for apple shaped women where their ‘beer belly’ is caused by alcohol, and they cut down on drinking to lose weight.
