Meet Frederic

How Frederic lost 6lb in 6 short weeks

1. Cardio

Frederic incorporated cardio training into his fitness routine. This is a tried and tested method of burning fat – and in turn, reducing overall body weight.

Steady-state cardio such as jogging and cycling has been popular since the 80s. It involves raising your heart rate through aerobic exercise and maintaining that level for 30-60 minutes. At the start of your session the body burns through its carbohydrate stores, but after around 20 minutes these become exhausted. At this point, your body switches to burning fat stores which is where the real weight loss benefits can be seen.

Doing cardio for long periods of time may seem like a chore but it’s an incredibly effective way to lose weight. The good news is you don’t have to push yourself to your limits in terms of intensity. Just raising your heart rate to a point where you’re breathing heavily is enough to burn fat, as long as you do it for more than 20 minutes. Frederic exercised 5 times per week – so quickly saw the results he was looking for.

2. Strength training

Performing strength training that targeted the muscles was also a key component of Frederic’s regime. Muscle requires more energy than fat to sustain itself, so having more of it will mean that your body naturally burns more calories. This helps you to lose weight more quickly and is one of the reasons that strength training promotes weight loss.

Developing muscular strength also defines and tones your physique so that you appear slimmer too. If there’s an area of your body that you’d like to tone up then do strength exercises that specifically target it. For the stomach and hips, this could be bicycle crunches, back extensions, and various forms of the plank. For the glutes and thighs, squats and lunges are your best friends.

3. Eating a balanced diet

Frederic ate a balanced diet which is something that’s important for all of us. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, tone up, or simply stay healthy, eating a wide variety of foods will help. It can be easy to get stuck in a rut of eating the same meals over and over again, but this will limit your nutrient intake. Aim for at least 5 portions of fruit and veg each day in a variety of different colors. Eat plenty of lean protein like chicken, turkey, and pulses so that you’re getting enough amino acids to support muscle development. Having 2 portions of oily fish each week (like mackerel or sardines) is also important for your physical and mental health.
